Meeting at the Crossroads of Pain and Psychiatry
1/2/2025 - 1/1/2030Event Description
Individuals with pain and co-occurring psychiatric disorders often present with unique challenges to safe and effective care. Mental health conditions may impact pain perception, affective responses, and the interpretation of physical symptoms, while pain may negatively impact mental health conditions and responses to treatment. The biopsychosocial model of pain supports the understanding of overlap and common ground in the pathophysiology and treatment of co-occurring pain and psychiatric conditions. This presentation will assist participants to identify the bidirectional impact of acute and chronic pain on mental health conditions and gain a deeper understanding of vital considerations for providing care to patients who are affected by these conditions. The intersection of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment modalities used in the treatment of pain and mental health conditions will be addressed.
